Synopsis
Set in the northern wilds surrounding the tiny sub-Arctic town of Dawson City, Yukon, Sovereign Soil is an ode to the beauty of this ferocious, remote land and the wisdom of those who’ve chosen to call it home.
A word from Tënk
David Curtis’s Sovereign Soil offers a compelling look at farmers and homesteaders in Dawson City who have taken up the challenge of growing food north of the 60th parallel, and celebrates the beauty of this ferocious and remote place.
It is truly remarkable to accompany these inspiring characters going through such an endeavour and the simple fact that harvesting Brussels sprouts under a thick blanket of snow and sheltering fruit trees under makeshift canopies yield results in such a place is a testament to the fighting nature of these Yukoners and the uphill battle they have to put up with, every year.
Through stunning visuals, the film allows us to beat witness to these growers’ commitment to food sovereignty, community, and environmental stewardship.
