Synopsis
Monolithic power plants; billowing columns of smoke; the backdrop of a red sun. Sirens is an experimental short documentary that captures Germany’s coal-fired power plants in their final years of generating energy. Shot entirely from helicopters, the film takes us on a journey through industrial wastelands, thus recalling the passage of Ulysses’ boat through the Sirens’ strait. An odyssey through the dystopian industrial world that has left a permanent mark on Earth’s ecosphere.

The words of the beloved astrophysicist were widely echoed this week, as people around the world mourned his passing. And in the face of this dystopian odyssey, his words take on the air of prophecy. The metallic siren song of modernity is chilling, reminiscent of the sinister alarms of Chernobyl. Wisps of smoke rise into the sky like signals to gigantic creatures. The buckets of the monstrous wheel dig their unwavering furrow in the earth, which yields without resistance. An orgy of destruction, of metallic domination, of technological organization.
