The films of Locarno

Synopsis

The film depicts the young Ukrainian generation marked by war and political fractures since 2014. The starting point of the film is the preparation of a play based on the motifs of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. A portrait of a generation confronted with the trauma of war and a painful past, similar to its present and future after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

A word from Tënk

Against the backdrop of the Russian army's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the nagging jolts of a generation in distress.

The light flickers, facial creases intensify, tongues loosen and the floor crackles with the twitching movements of the five protagonists. The theatre is no longer just a place of confrontation, it becomes a place of refuge for their ills. It plays host to a very special event, allowing a revolution to blossom. Populated by loss and cruel dilemmas, the tragic lives of these five individuals resonate with the famous questioning declaimed by the Shakespearean character. Buried for far too long, the memories of these torn souls rumble on, and the extent of the abyss dug by their wounds is exposed. The totalizing, political dimension of the most intimate conflicts that haunt them is laid bare. The vibrant, inhabited voices of their pleas make it their duty to alert us. They whisper to us that pain and trauma will remain, that consensus will come at an immeasurable cost, that anger will not be appeased, nor will revolt wither.
