Synopsis

White on White is director Viera Čákanyová’s video diary that she kept while staying at the Polish Antarctic station, where in 2017 she shot the film FREM, whose main character was an artificial neural network. During her stay, the author chats with various artificial intelligences, leading conversations that touch on the nature of film, art, and the meaning of life while also revealing a way of thinking that’s free from humanity and from an emotionality that forces deep introspection.

A word from Tënk

Many shades of white unfold on the icy, pristine Antarctic horizon. Stationed in a Polish research station, filmmaker Viera Čákanyová (FREM, 2019) makes a lyrical film-essay in the form of a video diary about climate change and the influence of the human species on the planet. Amusing and philosophical conversations with a network of artificial neurons about the meaning of life, cinema and art as perceived by a machine reveal a way of thinking devoid of human emotions. Far from civilization, the director adapts to the solitude and silence imposed by the local climate and immerses herself in deep introspection about the future.
