Synopsis

Alex Anna’s body is a canvas: her scars come to life to tell the story of her struggle with depression and self-harm. In this poetic and intimate short documentary, real footage and animation intertwine to give voice to these issues.

A word from Tënk

Scars revolves around a sensitive subject that is often not discussed enough. Through introspective self-narration, meticulous sound design, and clean visuals, Alex Anna addresses the topic of self-harm with striking authenticity.

Her body is presented as a map of her experiences, on which the artist charts the pains of the past. With skillful animation effects, the prominence of her scars is magnified. The off-screen voice, as sincere as it is poetic, reveals the suffering behind the cuts. This artistic approach to scarification makes visible this coping mechanism and, more broadly, dismantles the stigmas associated with this behavior.

Despite the pain that accompanied each cut, Alex Anna asserts that they "bear witness to a part of my life, much like tattoos testify to another." By delicately and honestly surveying her skin here, she seems to free herself from her own narrative. Despite the perpetual "invisible battle" against depression and its manifestations (which is also addressed in her upcoming film Create; Survive), there emerges from this creative process a form of emancipation with a healing power.

Scars addresses a subject as intimate as it is universal, exposing the audience to complete vulnerability. Produced in collaboration with her close ones, the artist demonstrates immense vulnerability, which undoubtedly constitutes the singular strength of this hybrid documentary.
