Synopsis
Despite the 1994 ceasefire, Armenia and Azerbaijan continue to fight fiercely over the mountainous Nagorny Karabakh region. More than 25 years after the war, nationalistic passions seem as strong as ever. With the restraint that comes with our foreigner’s gaze, Under the Same Sun offers an attentive ear, in search of understanding in these young countries with old wounds.

Through a series of meetings with the current inhabitants of the Nagorno-Karabakh region and those who once lived there, the filmmaker of Under the Same Sun collects the moving testimonies of these people living with the weight of history on a daily basis, even in their dreams. How to live after the war? How to make sense of all this suffering, of all these losses? How to find the hope of a lull? What future for the young generation? With a sober treatment and a skilful and sparing use of archives, François Jacob reaches out and frees the word, lingering on the faces and places marked by this endless conflict. A film full of humanity on the realities and aftermath of a dehumanizing war that has sadly returned to the forefront with the resurgence of tensions in 2020.
