The multisecular use of the Qulliq (or oil lamp) makes this object a true ally of the Inuit community. A truly meaningful object, we find traces of its existence in their religious stories.

The lamp is traditionally an offering from the man to his wife, as a symbol of defense for the family. However, its preparation soon encounters a gendered assignment. The woman taps, gropes and digs in this igloo to perpetuate the balance of the flame. By extension, she protects the home and thus, life.

Arctic cotton (suputi), wicks, hammer, sticks, seal fat… It is a whole architecture that is built, cadenced by Inuit songs. This rhythm punctuated by meticulous gestures reinforces the ritualized use of the Qulliq. Thanks to the latter, we are guaranteed light, warm and dry clothes, meat and tea!
