Synopsis

A group of young filmmakers ask residents of Casablanca for their opinions on Moroccan cinema as part of a film project. During the shoot, a dispute breaks out between a dockworker and his superior, resulting in the accidental death of the latter. Having captured the incident on film, the crew begins to question the man’s motives and reflect on the role of cinema in society and the forms it can take.

A word from Tënk

"The artist is someone who anticipates the event."

About Some Meaningless Events is undoubtedly a complex film—the product of a turbulent era or, at the very least, one filled with questions. At the time, Moroccan cinema was searching for its identity, striving to unfold freely, while Morocco itself grew increasingly isolated, caught in the grip of the "Years of Lead" under King Hassan II. With his first feature film, Derkaoui challenges the very role of cinema, asserting its function as a social and ideological force. It is both a manifesto and a cry—a cry for help, a cry of rage against political repression that was dragging Moroccan society into cultural and intellectual stagnation. A meta-film where narratives and genres intertwine, About Some Meaningless Events is a polyphonic labyrinth of a film, lingering in that uncertain space between cinema’s triumph and its surrender.
